Pilot Medical Certification Requirements

Before flying solo in an airplane, gyroplane or helicopter you must obtain a medical certificate.  Many people choose to get their medical certificate before they begin flight training.  If you are unable to obtain a medical certificate, you will not be able to become a pilot.  Knowing of any condition that will prevent you from being able to fly will prevent you from spending money on lessons that will not benefit you.

Having a physical disability will not necessarily prevent a person from obtaining their medical certificate.  However, some limitations may be imposed depending on the type of disability a person has.  You can always contact an FAA-authorized medical examiner to find out if your disability will prevent you from receiving your certificate if there are any doubts about qualifying.

Note:  Flying a balloon or a glider does not require a medical certificate.  The operator must simply certify that they have no medical defects that would prevent them from being capable of operating the aircraft which they will be flying.

Medical certificates must be issued by an FAA-authorized aviation medical examiner.  There are more than 5,000 doctors in the U.S. who are able to administer the required exam.  A list of aviation medical examiners may be found by visiting this site.

There are three classes of medical certification for pilots.  The required certificate depends on what level of flying you are planning on preforming and are as follows:

  • First-class – Required for airline transport pilots
  • Second-class – Required for commercial pilots
  • Third-class – Required for flight students, private pilots and recreational pilots

Medical certifications requirements are set forth by the U.S. government and do not vary from state to state.
